Along the Riverbank
I bet you're wondering about that title, huh? Along the Riverbank. Is that like a fishing reference or an allusion to the fact that I really like to swim?
Actually no. To be honest, I'm actually a little afraid of water. Which is odd because I can definitely swim. I'm just not a fan. Especially of water at night. Just the thought of swimming in the lake in the dark makes me nervous. Weird, I know. It's one of my fatal flaws. And now that you've experienced one dimension of my quirkiness, we can return to the point.
The title of my blog comes from a verse that has been so powerful in my life, especially through my time at college. It comes from the seventeenth chapter of Jeremiah:
"Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, who have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along the riverbank with roots that reach deep into the ground. Such trees are not bothered by heat or worried by long months of drought" (Jeremiah 17:7-8).
This is the verse I return to. When I feel like I'm withering, being scorched, crumpling under the heat of the world, in drought, I repeat this verse to myself over and over.
I am planted along the riverbank. My roots are deep. And my Source of life won't ever run dry.
So if you are like me and feel like you're in a season of drought, remember that promise. We can make it. By God's grace, we will make it.
